Ionad Oidhreachta Leitir Mealláin agus Gharumna
A lot of interest was shown in cultural and heritage exhibitions held in recent years of the private collection of the local historian John Bhaba Jeaic Ó Confhaola and thus the committee decided to find a permanent centre to exhibit the rich heritage of the area and is doing great so far. John has a fine collection of old books in Irish and English as well as newspapers and magazines from times past and these have been recorded on a database in the centre and students and researchers alike are more than welcome to use the facilities provided. You will see a great exhibition of tools and instruments from long ago in the centre as well as blacksmith, carpentry and farming tools to name but a few. John has a rich collection of photographs of families in the area and of old customs practised in the area in times past and these give a great insight into life as it was. As recognition of the work that has been done and is still ongoing in the Heritage Centre, we got second place for the Connemara Electoral Area in Galway County Council’s County Heritage Awards 2009 and we were awarded 1st place for the next two years subsequent.
